چکیده

A series of experiments in recent years have shown that under carefully designed circumstances the group velocity, or even more surprisingly the energy velocity can exceed the speed of light in vacuum or become negative (abnormal velocities). These abnormal results have led some researchers to question the validity of special relativity, or at least cast doubt on the relevance of these principles to the aforementioned experiments. In this work series of experiments with single electromagnetic pulses measured in both time and frequency domain are described. It is seen that while these experiments verify the aforementioned abnormal velocities, they are not in contradiction with the principles of special relativity (Einstein causality). In this regard, the important concept of “front” or “Sommerfeld forerunner” is reintroduced, and it is argued that the only physical velocity required to obey the Einstein causality is the “front velocity.”

Quantum Noise and Superluminal Propagation

Causal “superluminal” effects have recently been observed and discussed in various contexts. The question arises whether such effects could be observed with extremely weak pulses, and what would prevent the observation of an “optical tachyon.” Aharonov, Reznik, and Stern (ARS) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 2190 (1998)] have argued that quantum noise will preclude the observation of a superluminal group...

k−Essence, superluminal propagation, causality and emergent geometry

The k-essence theories admit in general the superluminal propagation of the perturbations on classical backgrounds. We show that in spite of the superluminal propagation the causal paradoxes do not arise in these theories and in this respect they are not less safe than General Relativity.

Tachyons and the Wheeler–Feynman absorber theory

The Proca equation with negative mass-square is studied in a refractive and absorptive spacetime. The generation of superluminal radiation fields by subluminal currents is discussed. The possibility of time-symmetric wave propagation is analysed in the context of the Wheeler–Feynman absorber theory; it is shown how advanced modes of the Proca field can be turned into retarded ones in a permeabl...

Faster than Light Photons in Gravitational Fields II – Dispersion and Vacuum Polarisation

Vacuum polarisation in QED in a background gravi-tational field induces interactions which effectively violate the strong equivalence principle and affect the propagation of light. In the low frequency limit, Drummond and Hathrell have shown that this mechanism leads to superluminal photon velocities. To confront this phenomenon with causality, however, it is necessary to extend the calculation...

Negative Group Velocity Superluminal Propagation in Optical Fibers Using Stimulated Brillouin Scattering

We demonstrated the superluminal propagation at negative group velocity using stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers. In the scheme, the Stokes wave is circulated back into the ring cavity for Brillouin lasing to enhance the peak loss. The experiment demonstrated the superluminal light propagation can be realized by increasing the input signal power. The largest time advancemen...

0 Apparent Superluminal Behavior in Wave Propagation

The apparent superluminal propagation of electromagnetic signals seen in recent experiments is shown to be the result of simple and robust properties of relativistic field equations. Although the wave front of a signal passing through a classically forbidden region can never move faster than light, an attenuated replica of the signal is reproduced " instantaneously " on the other side of the ba...
